The Origin of Kurdish Mamosta مامۆستا  Teacher

Kurdish (Mamosta مامۆستا) used as a title for a teacher is definitely cognate with Arabic (Ustaath استاذ) which is a borrowing from Iranian Kurdish/Persian (wasta) meaning master. Wasta in turn is from PIE mag-yos a comparative of root meg (great) – (he who is greater), English magister from Latin magister (chief, director, one with authority), old French maistre, French Maître, German Meister.

Thus the Kurdish word Mamosta is not from maam + wasta. Maam (uncle) is a borrowing from Arabic 3amm (uncle).
